On August 11th, China Central Television (CCTV) program crew of “the Belt and Road” entered Dhaka University, Bangladesh. They paid a visit to the Chinese department and China Research Center at Institute of Modern Languages as well as the Confucius Institute at Dhaka University(CI at DU), which was newly founded in November 2015.
The CCTV program crew respectively interviewed the director of Confucius Institute, Chinese teachers sent by Confucius Institute Headquarters (CIH/Hanban), the local teachers and students from both Chinese department and Confucius Institute at DU.
In the interview, the Chinese director of CI at DU introduced the history and present situation of Chinese teaching in Bangladesh. She excitedly said, along with the increasing positive impact of the Belt and Road Initiative, communication and cooperation in the fields of education, culture, trade etc. has rapidly increased. Accordingly more and more people learn Chinese language, and the demand of Chinese-related human resource is increasing. This brings both opportunities and challenges for TCSOL in Bangladesh. CCTV specially interviewed students in the Chinese arts class. The students have shown their intense interest in Chinese language and culture.
So far, the major institutions providing Chinese courses in Dhaka include: Chinese department at IML of DU that started Chinese class in very early time; Confucius Institute at North-south University as the first one in South Asian; CRI-SMF Confucius Classroom; the Bangladesh Distance Language Learning Center of YOU; BRAC University. This year, Confucius Institute at DU has also started to run classes. It is the second CI cooperation program of Yunnan University in Bangladesh.
